Dua – The connection between You and Allah

Allah Almighty the great says that:

“When my servants ask you concerning me, (tell them) I am indeed close (to them. I listen to the prayer of every supplicant when he calls me” [Quran 2:186]

Dua, otherwise known as supplication or a prayer is the process of undeviating communication between a person and his Lord.

When you sit to make dua, you reveal to Allah (swt) your most intimate feelings and desires. You ask Allah for forgiveness, you plead for your aspirations and needs to be fulfilled.

Dua is a safe haven for you when you have nowhere else to go. It is a place of solace for the grieving soul. You can pour your heart out to the Almighty when everyone around you has tired of listening.

Allah never stops listening to you. He is there all the time watching over you and listening to your problems, your every pain and guiding you even when you may feel that he is not.

Dua is powerful – it is inspiration for those that have lost all hope. You express your loneliness, your weaknesses, your mistakes before Allah (swt) and he listens and he forgives and he helps you when you least expect it.

Prophet Muammad (saw) said “dua is worship” then he recited the following verse:

“and your Lord says call on me. I will answer you [i.e. your prayer]. Surely those who are too proud to serve Me will enter Hell” (Quran 40:40) (Tirmidhi).

Guidelines for making duas

There are some guidelines for making duas that should be followed as these make the duas more effective. A person should;

  • Abstain from unlawful acts – Do not do any acts that are haram and then except God to fulfil your wishes. You should ensure that you have not been drinking, eating or earning harm income. That you have not been involved in haram sexual acts, as all these will negate the effect of duas. In a hadith it says:

The Prophet (SAW) mentioned the man who undertakes a lengthy journey and is disheveled and covered with dust, and he stretches his hands towards heaven saying, ‘O Lord, O Lord,’ when his food is haraam, his drink is haraam, his clothes are haraam. He is nourished with haraam, so how can he be granted a response? [Narrated by Muslim, 1015]

  • Have Wadu – it is good to be in a state of purity in body and clothes before you make dua, obviously if you are in dire need and do not have the provision to be in a state of purity then this is a different matter and Allah (swt) knows best, however in most cases where water is available Wadu is a must.
  • Praise Allah before and after the dua
  • Send salutations and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (swt) at the beginning and end of the dua
  • Face the Qibla
  • Ideally pray 2 rakat Salat-al-Haja – it has been recommended to perform 2 rakats when one is in need or in difficulty. Prophet Muhammad (saw) said “Whoever is in need of something, should make a perfect abulation [By observing all its rules and etiquette] and perform two rakats of prayer. After it, he should praise Allah, send blessings on his Messenger (saw) and then recite the following dua.
  • be sincere in what you ask for – Do not just ask for the sake of asking, Allah can see how sincere you are being in your duas.
  • Do try and recite duas from authentic hadiths as the Prophet Muhammad (saw) covered all aspects of human need for which he had made dua. Here is a list of duas.
  • Do make dua for yourself, your parents and for the whole of the Ummah.

What are the circumstances in Which Duas are accepted?

  1. Fard prayer – There is no particular time when dua should be offered, rather there are several points at which it should be offered. It is best to use the duas recommended by Prophet Muhammad (saw). If you are unable to use these duas, you should always make your duas with sincerity and avoid fancy language or using a sing-song voice. Always ensure that you praise Allah, send salutations to the Prophet Muhammad (saw) and ask for forgiveness by saying Astghfir Allah.
  2. Between Adhan and Qiyam – It is encouraged to make dua at this time as it is one of the preferred times to make dua.

It was narrated that Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Du’a is not rejected between the adhan and iqamah, so engage in du’a (supplication).” [Al-Tirmidhi]

There is a specific du’a to be narrated immediately after the adhan:

It was narrated from Jabir ibn ‘Abd-Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever says when he hears the call to prayer: Allahumma Rabba hadhihi’l-da’wat il-tammah wa’l-salat il-qaimah, ati Muhammadan il waseelata wa’l-fadeelah, wab’athhu maqaman mahmoodan illadhi wa’adtah (O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the prayer to be offered, grant Muhammad the privilege (of intercession) and also the eminence, and resurrect him to the praised position that You have promised),” my intercession for him will be permitted on the Day of Resurrection.”

  1. Tahajud – this is one of the most virtuous prayers after the fard prayers. The time for this is after Isha and remains until Fajr. However, it is said that it is best to perform thos prayer in the final third portion of the night and delay the witr prayer until after you have prayed it. The recommendation is that you pray 8 rakats in 2 or 4 units followed by 3 rakat witr. Allah has clearly said

“Worship him in a portion of the night and glorify him through the night” [Quran 76:26]

Prophet (Saw) highly recommended tahajud prayer and said “Make a habit of observing Tahajud prayer. It was the custom of the pious before you. It draws you close to you Lord, and keeps you away from sins” (Al-Tirmidhi).

  1. Rain – Its so wonderful to listen to the rain, but did you know that making dua when it rains is one of the accepted times? When rain falls, as it said in the hadeeth of Sahl ibn Sa’d that is attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):“There are two which will not be rejected: du’aa’ at the time of the call (to prayer) and when it is raining.” [Abu Dawood]
  2. Quran – Dua is accepted at the beginning and end of reading the Quran
  3. Travelling -During travel supplication is heard by Allah (swt) if the trip is for a good reason however please note that if the trip is for a bad intention or to perform any sort of sin this will not apply. The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said;

“Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah (SWT)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the one who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler” [Al-Tirmidhi]

  1. Death In a long hadith, Umm Salamah (RA) narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said, when Abu Salamah had just passed away, and had closed his eyes:

Do not ask for yourselves anything but good, for the angels will say ‘Ameen’ to all that you ask for. O Allah, forgive Abu Salamah, and raise his ranks among those who are guided.’ [Muslim, Abu Dawud]

  1. Zam Zam Water – When you drink Zam Zam water you may ask Allah (SWT) for anything you like to gain or benefit from this water such as healing from illness or any other dua you want to make.

“Jaber (RA) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said: ‘Zam Zam water is for what it is drunk for” [Ahmad].

  1. Jihad -When the Muslim is facing the enemy in battle, at this critical period, the du’a of a worshipper is accepted.

Sahl ibn Sa’d (RA) narrated the the Prophet (SAW) said: ‘Two duas are never rejected, or rarely rejected: the du’a during the call for prayer, and the du’a during the clamity when the two armies attack each other’ [Abu Dawud]

10. Fasting. The dua is accepted at the opening and breaking of the fast.  Dua of the one fasting until he breaks his fast:

The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said; Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah (SWT)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the one who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler. [Al-Tirmidhi]

and the Dua of the one fasting at the time of breaking fast :

The prophet (SAW) declared, ‘Three men whose dua is never rejected (by Allah) are: when a fasting person breaks fast (in another narration, the fasting person until he breaks his fast), the just ruler and the one who is oppressed.'[Al-Tirmidhi]
